Residents of north Baton Rouge receive free Y memberships

by Kristen Hogan | Jun 11, 2020

Baton Rouge, LA (June 11, 2020) – COVID-19 highlighted the health disparities plaguing lower socioeconomic groups, seniors and people of color in our communities. According to the most recent data, African-Americans comprised more than 55% of the deaths in LA due to COVID-19, but this same group make up approximately 32% of the population. "There's a structural issue that's taking place here, it's not a genetic issue for all non-white individuals in the U.S.," says Greg Millett, director of public policy at amfAR.

The most common explanations for disproportionate burden is that minority populations have a disproportionate burden of underlying comorbidities. This is true for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, asthma, HIV, morbid obesity, liver disease, and kidney disease.  By delivering on its Evidence Based Initiatives to address these underlying issues, the Y and ExxonMobil are working together to improve access and opportunities for physical activity and connectedness for North Baton Rouge residents.

ExxonMobil will donate $25,000 to the ExxonMobil YMCA to provide three-month YMCA memberships to nearly 170 North Baton Rouge residents. As the leading nonprofit for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, the Y works side-by-side with its neighbors every day to make sure that everyone, regardless of age, income or background, has the opportunity to learn, grow and thrive.

“The Y believes that all people deserve to live life to its fullest regardless of where they live,” said Christian Engle, President/CEO, YMCA of the Capital Area. “Our Strategic Plan calls for us to ensure that diverse, underserved and isolated communities feel supported by the Y. The Y’s call to action is centered around improving our community’s health and well-being and providing support to our neighbors.”

“The YMCA has been one of our strongest partners, incorporating proven best practices from around the world to serve the most under-resourced members of our local nearby neighborhoods,” said ExxonMobil Baton Rouge Public & Government Affairs Manager Stephanie Cargile. “If we are going to move the needle forward in positive outcomes for the neighbors we care deeply for, we will need to continue to leverage these evidence-based models and collaborative relationships.”

To apply for a free membership, please complete and submit our scholarship application to the ExxonMobil YMCA, 7717 Howell Blvd., Baton Rouge, La. Applicants must reside in the north Baton Rouge community.
