YMCA to offer distance learning program

by Kristen Hogan | Jul 24, 2020
***UPDATE August 6: We will not offer the Distance Learning Program at this location but we will offer it at the A. C. Lewis YMCA, Americana YMCA and C. B. Pennington Jr. YMCA. Registration is NOW OPEN!

**UPDATE July 31: We apologize for the delay in opening our registration for this program. After planning, preparation and promotion of our program, we were informed that due to state guidelines, we, and other like agencies, are unable to offer this program while schools are open. We have been in discussion with the Board of Education in EBR, the State BOE and BESE that this law needs to be amended due to children being sent home by the school.  Although schools are technically open, children are not there.  We have also been in communication with BESE and the Governor’s Office.  We are hopeful that this decision will be overturned as it impacts several organizations throughout the state.

We will post an update as soon as we find out if the amendment is approved. Thank you for your patience, we are doing our best to serve you and your children.**

YMCA to offer distance learning program

Children will have a safe place to learn and be cared for while parents are at work.

[Baton Rouge, La, July 23, 2020] – As school districts release a plan that includes a mix of virtual and face-to-face learning, many parents are left worrying about who assist with their children's school work. The YMCA of the Capital Area is providing relief of that worry by offering a distance learning program and childcare for students.

The Y has provided a safe childcare program since the beginning of the pandemic so extending services to offer virtual learning was something they knew parents would need. Caring for nearly 400 children since the pandemic began, the Y’s extra safety precautions have kept children in a safe and caring environment while their parents were at work.

The Y will offer distance learning childcare at five YMCA locations from 7am until 6pm. Virtual learning will take place during the assigned school schedule but afterwards, children will enjoy swimming, games, STEM projects and other activities. Distance learning childcare will be available for children who are in Pre-K through 8th grade.

The Y will provide directed supervision, wi-fi and a space for children to complete their virtual learning. Lunch will also be provided. The program will begin starting August 10 and pre-registration is required.
