SWIM LESSONS

The YMCA Swim Lessons Curriculum is a core group of aquatic skills every person needs to be safe around water. As the foundation of our program, these skills they are ready to learn, helping them to celebrate their successes, build self-confidence, and enjoy learning to swim and water safety. 


CHILD SWIM LESSON LEVELS:

Water Acclimation
In this beginning class, children develop comfort with being underwater and learn how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.
Ages: 3-12 

Water Movement
In this class, children are taught skills that focus on buoyancy and movement in the water while also learning how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. 
Ages: 3-12 

Water Stamina
In this class, children focus on swimming longer distances. In the event of falling into a body of water, children learn how to swim to safety.
Ages: 3-12

Stroke Introduction  
In this class, children are introduced to basic swimming strokes.
Ages: 5-12

Stroke Development
In this class, children continue to work on their swimming stroke technique and all major competitive strokes are introduced.
Ages: 5-12

Stoke Mechanics
In this class, children continue to work on their swimming stroke technique and all major competitive strokes are introduced. 
Ages: 5-12

OTHER SWIM LESSON LEVELS:

Adult Swim Lessons
(14 & Up)
Teaches basic fundamentals of flotation and introduces swimming. Helps overcome the uneasiness sometimes felt by adults learning how to swim.  Emphasizes front crawl and elementary backstroke. 

Private Lessons
(3 & Up)
Private lessons are 30 minutes in length. Private lessons are taught one on one with the instructor. 

Semi-Private Lessons
(3 & Up)
Semi-private lessons are for groups of no more than three children and one instructor. Aquatics Department does not group together semi-private lessons.

YMCA Lifeguard Certification
PAULA G. MANSHIP YMCA

This course is designed to provide the participants with the knowledge and skills needed to be a lifeguard and professional rescuer. Participants will be certified in CPR Pro for the Professional Rescuer, Basic First Aid and Emergency Oxygen Administration. The course presents information on the skills and knowledge lifeguards need in pool, lake, river, surf and waterpark environments. The comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to lifeguard by anticipating and preventing problems before they occur and by taking action to help those in danger when necessary. The course also covers safety skills, accident prevention, scanning, guarding techniques, emergency systems, rescue skills, first aid in aquatic environments, spinal injury management, open water dangers, legal responsibilities, pool management and information on how to get a job as a lifeguard. 

Prerequisites:
Minimum age of 16
Pass the Physical Competency Requirements (conducted in class on first day)

Session 3—April 29th—May 2nd (Friday 4pm – 8pm, Saturday & Sunday 8am – 6pm, Monday 5pm – 9pm)
Session 4—May 13th—16th (Friday 4pm – 8pm, Saturday & Sunday 8am – 6pm, Monday 5pm – 9pm)
Session 5—May 20th—23rd (Friday 4pm – 8pm, Saturday & Sunday 8am – 6pm, Monday 5pm – 9pm)
Session 6—June 3rd—6th (Friday 4pm – 8pm, Saturday & Sunday 8am – 6pm, Monday 5pm – 9pm)
